1.Use the reverse chronological order:

Recruiters are relatively indifferent towards your past work profiles. And that’s what makes a reverse chronological format the most relevant format for structuring your resume.

Here, you are supposed to jot down the most recent developments in your career first, then go backwards. Further, focus on your most recent work profiles & projects as recruiters seek candidates who can apply their skills right away.

2. Use power verbs:

Use power verbs as they help you describe your roles in an effective way.

For example, let’s say you had a point that talked about you taking care of sales in a certain region. Now, most professional go about writing this as:

Responsible for sales of the north-west region

However, using a power verb and incorporating the result of your action, could dramatically change the structure of your point:

Overseeing sales of the north-west region resulting in a quarterly revenue growth of USD 20,000

Make your resume reader-friendly and effective

As a job vacancy opens up, recruiters get bombarded with a lot of applications. It is said that a recruiter spends roughly 6 seconds on average to go through a resume.

This means that you have just 6 seconds to make an impression.

To ensure that recruiters do not dismiss your resume the minute they see it, you need to make it reader-friendly.

Here are three ways to accomplish this:

1. Use one liner-points:

Most professionals tend to make the major blunder of using bulky paragraphs to communicate their work experience. 

If you are guilty of doing this too, correct it immediately and use one-liner points instead.

Using points instead of paragraphs gives you a simple resume advantage as it makes your resume easy to read and comprehend. A more palatable resume is more likely to be evaluated for a longer time than something that is all over the place.

2. Use bolding to highlight your achievements:

Now that you have made your resume more readable, the next step is to make it more effective. A great way to do this is by marking some points in bold. By using bolding, you can easily divert the recruiter’s attention to those points that need to be noticed.

Bucketing is a resume term that is used for grouping  similar points under relevant sub-headings.

Since you are clubbing similar points together, the recruiter will instantly get a quick idea of your core competency areas as you have made their work easier by using bucketing. 

Some examples of unique headings you can use are:

  • “Marketing Campaign & Revenue Generation”, 
  • “Social Media Management & Budget Planning”,
  •  “SEO keyword planning & blog execution”

Distinguish your key skills under a distinct section

The key skills section is one of the most important sections in a resume.

As it is your marketing skills that make you a digital marketer, you should present them in your resume under a distinct section so it is effectively communicated in one go.

You can also divide this section into two parts:

  • Key skills (for your core skills such as content marketing, keyword planning, SEO optimization etc)
  • Technical skills (for your tool knowledge, example: google adwords, Ahrefs, SEOquake, Mozbar,etc)

Write an impactful summary

A professional summary is an overview of your career trajectory as a digital marketer. It should ideally communicate your career highlights, your work experience, your job title, and your key functional skills.

Here’s a how you can write a professional summary: 

  • Write your summary in a 3-5 lines paragraph. 
  • Write the summary as a last step while constructing your resume, to filter the most compelling points. 
  • Don’t just mention what you did. Instead, mention how you did it and the tools that you deployed to do the task.

Use keywords to optimize your resume

Job descriptions are designed to encompass the expertise that is required for a job position. 

Recruiters tend to use the JD to communicate the key qualifications needed for the given job.

These qualifications can be in the form of skills needed, minimum work experience, or certifications held. These qualifications together are called keywords.

So before applying for a given job, make sure that you thoroughly evaluate the job posting and look for these keywords. Once you identify them, use these keywords in your resume as long as you meet the criteria. Doing so increases your chances of getting shortlisted.
